viking73 Posted December 7, 2019 #204 Posted December 7, 2019 Hi, I found this book at a small antique shop near me for cheap. Wasn't really that interested until I saw it was signed which I thought was pretty cool. The dust jacket has some rips but the price was right so I brought it home -Derek

easterneagle87 Posted July 20, 2020 #207 Posted July 20, 2020 This book was a present from a very good friend (cadet friend from ROTC Advanced Camp whom was gracious enough to give me a space to live while I attended Avn Officer Basic Course at Ft. Rucker, AL) . He purchased the book and actually COL Sage knocked on my door late one night. Here was an old man who gave me his book. I had no clue what was going on and he told me to open the book. When I opened it, I said thanks. He asked, "Did you read - or something to that effect - and I said there is nothing there." He realized he had given me the wrong book, told me to follow him and then had me follow him to his house so he could give me the correct book. Pretty incredible experience when I look back on it. COL Sage was Steve McQueen's character in the movie, The Great Escape. I am blessed!
mikie Posted October 7, 2020 #208 Posted October 7, 2020 I spotted this book at my favorite hangout, The Recycle Bookstore. It's signed by the author, Admiral Mendenhall. Figured it wasn't bad for 8 bucks. I don't see a lot of information on him online so I guess I'll need to read the book to find out more about him. Two of my best buddies are former sub sailors, so now my problem is which one to give it to for Christmas! Mikie

acebookcollector Posted April 24, 2023 #213 Posted April 24, 2023 I have been collecting autographed books about WWII fighter pilots for about 6 years now so I have quite a few. I am pretty proud of my collection so far and thought I would share some of my most prized books. I got extremely fortunate and was able to pick up a number of books from the personal collection of Hub Zemke, the well known ace and Commander of the 56th and 479th fighter groups, and his son, Hub Zemke Jr.. I also have some books that belonged to fellow 56th fighter group pilot Walker "Bud" Mahurin.
Stony Posted April 24, 2023 #214 Posted April 24, 2023 When I worked at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, working directly with the American Fighter Aces Association was part of my job. I got to meet and get autographs for around a hundred aces from three wars. It was the most exciting part of my job.
UlyssesMcGill Posted June 6, 2024 #215 Posted June 6, 2024 I’ve got a copy of “The Fool Lieutenant” that is autographed by the subject, Lt. Robert T. Edlin, Company A, 2nd Ranger Battalion. He landed on and was wounded at Omaha Beach. He rejoined his company in July 1944, and in one battle, forced his way into the office of the commander of the Graf Spee Battery, pulled the pin on a grenade and held it to the commander’s stomach, and forced him to surrender the battery. Lt. Colonel Rudder put him up for the Medal of Honor for this but he was given Distinguished Service Cross instead.
