This seller also has a couple of other Purple Hearts for sale. What do you say about the engraving on those?

These Navy medals are usually beautifully hand engraved.

These two don’t have the finesse and look rather stiff.

The pictures look blurred on purpose to hide their lack of luster.

These all appear to be from that collection that's been trying to be sold for quite some time. Here's a compilation of photos that all came up for sale at the same time. This auction was taken down, as was the next one, due to the fake awards.

And at least one mixed group where it appears the AM and DFC are probably okay, but the Purple Heart is fake...

Shumate DFC and AM were sold on ebay last month.  Looks like the seller moved most of the non-purple heart items on ebay and put the rest on Gunbroker.  Just checked and looks like they are no longer posted.  Hopefully he pulled them and someone didn't buy them.

I can confirm that the Shumate Purple Heart in the photos Dave posted above is indeed fake. The original is safe and sound in my collection. Someone just paid $300 for the fake one: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/875981771

Shumate's DFC and AM were sold on eBay last month, as kcmo pointed out. They are now in the hands of a gentleman whose grandfather was a member of Shumate's crew and was KIA when they were shot down on August 8, 1945.

Shumate's effects were originally split up and sold on eBay last year in about 50 different auctions. The "collector" who bought his DFC and AM also purchased a number of other items at that time, which were also resold on eBay last month.

Here are some more pictures of the fake James L Shumate Purple Heart that sold on Gunbroker for $300 on 11 August 2020.

Captain James L Shumate was the pilot of the last B-29 shot down over Japan during World War II. On 8 August 1945, B-29 44-87664, "The City of Phoenix" of the 29th Bomb Group, was shot down by flak just before bombs away. Ten members of the crew including Shumate were Killed In Action. Two of the crew, M/Sgt Lester C. Morris and S/Sgt Serafino Morone, bailed out and were captured.

M/Sgt Morris suffered a severe injury to his leg when he bailed out, which the Japanese refused to treat, but he survived and would return home after the war.

The day after they were shot down, S/Sgt Morone was tied to a pole and beaten for hours by hundreds of Japanese civilians before being beheaded by a Japanese officer. He was killed 6 days before the war ended.
