A new ebay buckle posting (eBay item number: 294913072075), Harley Davidson. Sooo... it looks P.I. made but not quite sure. How about some input.

Next thought, why do folks think that Harley buckles need to ask such a high price? Currently asking $125. Hey, if you can get it, good for them, but I just don't see it.

Hey Ben, thanks for posting the Harley buckle.  I love the eagle.  Value is in the eye of the beholder/collector and based on supply and demand.  Personally I wouldn't pay $125 (in 2022 dollars) but I'd pay $25.  Coin / art collectors pay hundreds of thousands of dollars and even millions of dollars which is crazy IMO when you think of it.  That's a league of collecting in a galaxy far far away.   At the end of the day, none of us can take it with us when we go.  Enough philosophizing....

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the Harley buckle posted above was made in Korea not the Philippines.  Notice the edge boarder design and the back of the buckle are not styles seen on Philippine buckles.   Attached is the back of the Harley buckle.  Note that the bail is not fixed in place like on Philippine buckles rather this is how buckles are made in Korea.

Best Regards, Bill

Got that impression from vforvictory1945 as well. I agree with the backing, sure is a close comparison though. Enjoying all of the sharing.

Continuing with my posts #'s 692 & 700, Although not P.I. carved, these Hong Kong carved buckles are similar in appearance but don't have the quality carving as their P.I. brothers they are nearly as interesting and reflect a time (basically the earlier Cold War era) when sailors wanted to wear a little swag with their uniforms. Here is another that has been posted on Etsy for quite some time. Aviation Boatswain Mate and I believe it says "Fury", can be yours for $34 & s/h.

Interesting buckle up on ebay right now that was brought to my attention by vforvictory1945. I'm not a Navy guy, but this seems like a pretty odd rate, Machinist Accountant. What did they do? Count machines? Absolutely no offense to those whose worked and held that rate.  Additionally, we discussed the design. It looks P.I. made, but the name looks more like Hong Kong engraved. Maybe they had it made and then on another port of call in HK they thought, "Hey, I meant to have them put my name on it."

That is the data processing (DP) rating badge.  I believe this rate was around from about 1967 to the late 90s.  Their job was to operate date processing and similar machines.

It could be (and likely was based on the style) a Machinist Accountant rate at the time it was engraved.  Here is an excerpt of the current IT rating history from https://stationhypo.com/2018/06/04/history-of-the-information-system-technology-it-rating/

"In 1948 the navy combined the Punched Card Accounting Operators and Key Punch (Operators and Supervisors) specialist ratings to establish the Machine Accountants (MA).  Experts in machine-accounting procedures, the MA rating responsibilities included operating accounting machines and maintaining key-punching and key-verifying equipment to record statistical data on tabulating cards. They also prepared routine and special reports based on the information they received and analyzed. Typically, MAs served on large ships and shore stations.

Data Processing technician (DP) rating badge

In 1967, the MA rating name and designation was changed to Data Processing technician (DP).  The DP rating was responsible for operating and maintaining transceivers, sorters, collators, reproducers, interpreters, alphabetic accounting machines, and digital electronic data processing machines for accounting and statistical purposes. They were used extensively to operate accounting systems in order to maintain personnel records, keep tabs on the receipt and transfer of supplies and disbursement of money as well as to keep track of all equipment the Navy owned.

As the technology changed, so did the jobs of the DP rating. Because their work moved into the realm of information and communication systems rather than simply processing data for computer manipulation the Navy on October 1, 1997 disestablished the DP rating and merged the rating into the radiomen rating."

I agree that the engraving style of the name (J. A. Justice) is not really seen on other Philippine buckles.  It could have been added anywhere.  Maybe Hong Kong, Guam, or even in Japan.

Here are examples of "Philippines" buckles without and with someone's name (G. W. Schliere) engraved on them...

Having palm trees flank the central design and the palm trees take up all the vertical space is uncommon but here are three examples.  The bottom one (USS REPOSE AH-16) looks the closest to the J. E. Justice buckle IMO.

Here's a beauty that just popped up on the 'bay'. Naval Aerographer,  R. B. NOWLAN, 1953 - 1954, PHILIPPINES

A makers mark on the back, but not a really good picture of it. Listing says, Maker: Cruz And Sons

It's got a "Buy It Now" price.

From the seller, vintagebeltbuckles, they previously had an F-18 "JUDY" oval buckle listed a ways back. They have over 4400 buckles listed presently.

Found this one while searching through the "lots". MAGCOBAR. This was in a lot of 4 buckles.  Looks like the company is based in oil and petroleum production.

OK, I know it was late when I posted this buckle last night, BUT ... I could've sworn this buckle was first listed at $75. Now looking today it's at $95. WTPhilipp!?!

Well, I took an honest shot at this USMC buckle lot that just sold on the 'bay. Congrats to the winner. I sent a low ball offer initially that was ignored by the seller. I would've too, but it never hurts to take a shot. I do prefer the cut-out buckles, but overall it was a good lot. Saving $ money this month. 😁
