Silly question, perhaps, but what does "18th Inf., AUS." mean on his NY Medal card?

18th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Division - AUS means Army of the United States - His designation indicates he was a draftee in WWII

Hello,

Hope someone is still monitoring this thread. I was hoping to get assistance on IDing the service member for CSC #2330.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Michael

New York State Conspicuous Service Cross 2330 was awarded to Joseph E. Brill for service in World War 2 in 1946.

Or, it was awarded to Private Maggi Orazio, HQ Company, 60th Infantry, 5th Division for service in World Was 1.

When they re-instituted the Conspicuous Service Cross in 1944 they stared the numbering over at 1. However, you can tell the difference, the World Was 1 Conspicuous Service Crosses have the dates 1917 1919 on the obverse above the New York State Seal.

Not sure where you got that information from? But according to the award card as shown on Ancestry, it was awarded to William Robert Parr. A Private First Class in the 34th Infantry Division, 135th Infantry Regiment, Company G.

Awarded on August 23, 1946.

My apologies, I transposed a number when I did the lookup. You are correct with it being William Parr.

My source is "For Merit, Service, and Valor: A History of Some New York Military Decorations and Awards with their Recipients (1915 - 1983) Volume II" by Doug Boyce, Gary Hartman, Nick McDowell. Copy write Orders and Medals Society of American, 2008

Again, I apologize for my sloppiness in looking up the information, this book also shows the recipient as William Parr when I use the correct number.

Is it a WWI or WWII Cross - 2 separate lists - send me a PM with pic and I can look it up and hopefully find an issue card

Is there any chance I could find out who NY CSC #4590 was awarded to?

It appears to have been awarded some time in the 1970’s.

Thank you for any leads!

4590 was issued in 1947, why would you say 1970's? - Is it marked "Sterling" on the reverse?

Based on the “crimp brooch” and the overall quality of the medal, it appears to be a more recent issue.

Was there another series where they restarted the numbering?

These newer medals I think are less than 10 years old - Unfortunately the manufacturer duplicated numbers from the WWII Crosses which makes no sense and is confusing to newer collectors - I don't really understand why they numbered these modern crosses since there is not an available reference to to find the recipient and they appear to be poorly made.

I was not aware of this, thank you for the information.

In my opinion if the medals are not marked “Sterling” they are not worth buying.
