4starchris, thanks for the additions on the foreign orders.

Do you happen to know which grades/classes of these orders he received

Many thanks,

Jan

Does anyone know where a Congressional Space Medal of Honor is on display? I think there is one at the Naval Yard Museum in the DC area but I am wondering if there is one closer to me so I can make a trip to get some good photos of one.

Thanks!

Roger Chaffee's CSMOH is on display in Michigan. Here is a link: http://www.astronautmemorial.net/chaffeemedal.htm

Hi,

I've been googling a bit about Aldrin's foreign order, and found he received the Officer grade of the Belgian Leopold Order and also an Officer of the Order of the Leopard of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Best regards, Jan

Thank you for reply an addition to the thread. May I ask where you found the great citations. I love when others can add information to any thread. Thank you.

OK, you are going to love this. It is called the NASA additional awards device.

The MIL spec for this thing identifies it as "Ribbon Attachment, Additional Awards, National Aeronautics and Space Administration".

The MIL spec for the Oak Leaf Cluster identifies it as "Ribbon Attachment, Oak Leaf Cluster".

Here is the MIL spec for the NASA additional awards device. As you can tell, the device is a representation of the NASA symbol, the

sphere with the stylized swoop.

ribbon_attachment.pdf

Wow, someone worked hard on coming up with that name! So do you guys know of any NASA medal that has been awarded to one person more the 3 times? If so what did they do about the device on the ribbon? Surely someone needed more then two devices on one of there ribbons?

I noticed the author of the book “Call of Duty” mentions it as a “Planet”. To me it looks like the old meatball vector patch design which I think I based on a planet indicated by the circle and space travel as the vector surrounding it. Does that sound right?

Reverse side photo of the CSMOH

I finally found a photo, though not very good, of the back side of the Congressional Space Medal Of Honor. It is from the Nov-Dec 2001 Vol. 52 Num. 6 of the JOMSA on page 7. I have seen a real photo of the back side on some obscure forum while surfing the net for something else but I did not save it and can no longer find it. The 13 page article is by John E. Strandberg and gives the history through the first 12 recipients. Also included are color illustrations of the designs submitted by the Institute of Heraldry that were rejected and it mentions that the contract for the medal was given to the Medallic Art Company of New York. Great article but I would like to see an updated version, maybe someday?

I suspect, like all other medals, the CSMOH is engraved. Has anyone ever seen one engraved?

That is a great pic for you. In my life time of dealing with NASA I have seen over 8 backs and they were all engraved. But like most events I am invited to attend, taking pics at the time was not an option. I didn't want to be "that guy" that interrupted everything to live the event thru the lens.

That has even happened with me with the legion of valor and medal of honor events. Don't ever want to be "that guy", then no more invites. However, at times I have been "that guy" and I promised I would never share the pics of the reverse side. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Updating the NASA medal display set

Ok, I thought it was time for a make over/update.

Pulled the frame down and opened it up.

Wrote out discreptions for the two newest NASA medals I had added already added as well as the CSMOH and sent them off to the engravers (Trophy shop) to make up for me ($23 for the three).

Got a nice shot of CSMOH ribbon and manipulated it to the shape I had used originally and printed it out on photo paper then mounted it to foam board and cut it out.

Updated the suspension device and modified the medal suspension arc so the balsa wood medal is actually suspended from the foam ribbon base and moves now.

Think I will use some filler an do some work on the balsa wood medal now to try and make it look a little better. Will post those pic’s up when I get there. In the mean time here are some pic’s of what I did so far.

Hi Guys,

There still seems to be some confusion about Buzz Aldrin's full order/medal entitlement.

On Wiki (I know it is not the most reliable source) they mention he got 2 Space Flight Medals (SFM).

On the NASA website it is stated the the SFM: "is awarded to Space Transportation System (STS) flight crewmembers (civil and military astronauts, mission specialists, payload specialists, and civilians) to recognize individual participation in an STS flight mission. The medal is granted for participation in initial flight. The NASA Space Flight Cluster is awarded for subsequent flight(s)."

So logically he would not be entitled to this medal.

On his personal website he has a list of awards & achievements that gives some alternative foreign medals & orders than the ones mentioned here. (see bold script)

See the pdf here: buzzaldrin.com/files/pdf/Highlights_Achievements.pdf

I'll try to recapitulate:

1st row

Air Force Distinguished Service Medal

Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 oak leaf cluster

Air Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters

2nd row

Air Force Commendation Medal

Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (Ribbon)

Presidential Medal of Freedom

3rd row

NASA Distinguished Service Medal

NASA Exceptional Service Medal

National Defense Medal with one bronze star.

Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars.

4th row

Air force ribbon Longevity Service Award with 3 oak leaf clusters (ribbon)

Brazil- Order of Aeronautical Merit, Commander

Japan- Order of the Rising Sun OR alternatively Order of Merit (Cultural)

Peru- Order of the Sun

5th row

Belgium- Order of Leopold - officer

France- Legion of Honor - knight

Iran- Order of the Lion and Sun OR alternatively Order of the Taj

Thailand- Order of the White Elephant

6th row

Yugoslavia- Order of the White Flag OR alternatively Order of the Yugoslav Star (?)

Bolivia- Order of Aeronatical Merit

Republic of Korea Unit Citation (ribbon)

United Nations Service Medal (Korea)

From the list on his personal website but not on the ribbon bar:

Congo - Order of the Leopard - officer

Italy - Order of Merit of the Republic

(which is visible on his miniature, see bottom row on the pic in attach, it's the little white cross)

Korea - Order of the Rose Azalea

Does anyone have a color picture of him wearing his ribbons?

One other site mentions that: He also received awards and medals from 23 other countries.

So we're still a few short. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.
