bobgee Posted January 11, 2013 Share #179 Posted January 11, 2013 Here's my earliest. No. 45, awarded in the first round on November 15, 1896. Has an award bar for his 5th enlistment. He also received a 6th & 7th but they're missing. Has the rare original upper USMC pin-back bar with the molded open catch. These apprently broke easily and were replaced with an applied open catch around 1900 and then with the roller catch around 1910/11. bobgee Posted January 11, 2013 Share #180 Posted January 11, 2013 This is the highest number I've encountered, No. 100111 awarded in 1938. This was shortly before the Corps switched to the "A" & "B" prefixes with a new set of numbers. "A" medals were awarded from HQMC; "B" numbers from the Dept of the Pacific in San Francisco. bobgee Posted January 11, 2013 Share #185 Posted January 11, 2013 Those are all incredible, Bob. I especially love #45...can we see images of the clasp and bars? Thanks, Brig. Here's some more pics. Hope they help. BTW note the nice choclate brown coloring on this medal as opposed to the brighter later awards. FYI - This "Old Corps" Marine was born in Ireland in 1856. He enisted in May 1877 at Philadelphia. His entire service was at the Phila QM Depot and he remained a Private through his first five enlistments (with Character Excellent!). He was promoted to Sgt in 1904 and QMSgt in 1908; retired in 1909 and died at Philadelphia in 1923. Awarded three Bars to his GCM only the first awarded in 1902 survives. Military-Memorabilia Posted January 17, 2013 Share #189 Posted January 17, 2013 Here is a basic USMC GCM I found a few years back. I was wondering if someone could give me an approximate date of manufacture for this medal? Also - there is a USMC CG reference book for sale currently on eBay ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/USMC-Good-Conduct-Medal-Book-Type-XV-85-Color-Pic-/251214549443?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D4932847893587492606%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D261150886424%26 ). Adam R Posted January 17, 2013 Share #190 Posted January 17, 2013 Here is a basic USMC GCM I found a few years back. Also - there is a USMC CG reference book for sale currently on eBay ( http://www.ebay.com/...d=261150886424 ). Has anyone read this phamplet - what is its quality of information? Date of manufacture is within the last 20 years, and more likely the last 10 years. The booklet on eBay is pretty good. (Shameless plug - I provided most of the photos for it.) There are no other reference books with similar information on the market.

Javelin4life Posted February 8, 2018 Share #195 Posted February 8, 2018 Id like to also add to this thread a medal I am still currently researching: a beautiful pre-WWI GCM to Sgt. Earl C McIntire, whose Service spanned from 1909-1926. The top bar is a rarer 1st style enlistment bar and both the top and bottom bars have matching serial numbers to the medal. I edited the pictures slightly to bring out some of the detail in the planchet and bars. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
