In honor of the announcement today of the finding of the USS Hornet CV 8. From our WW2 Disney insignia collection: This insignia was created for the USS Hornet CV-8. Today it was announced that she was found in late January 2019 by the expedition crew of Paul G. Allen's Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel. Hornet was found 5,400 meters (nearly 17,500 feet) below the surface, resting on the floor of the South Pacific Ocean around the Solomon Islands and like the Indianapolis, is amazingly preserved due to the lack of oxygen and marine life at that depth.

This lobby card-style photo is from the war and was used to promote Disney's support of military units.. Photo measures approximately 8 x 10 inches and is near mint with some fading of the nest and hornets flying out and around it.

Finding these historic lost ww2 ships is awesome. It helps to keep the memory of the men who served aboard alive and honor those lost their lives.

Amazing find and hopefully it will be left alone.

It looks like the photo has also been used on this matchbook.

Always has a soft spot for CV-8. The Doolittle bombers were loaded aboard at Alameda NAS, just 50 miles from here. USS Hornet CV-12 is docked at the same peer.

It was super that they found this ship and the others this company has found. It's in amazing condition. A great state of preservation. Time capsule.
