seanmc1114 Posted December 16, 2015 Share #27 Posted December 16, 2015 The next two belonged to the same Medical Service Corps officer. Neither shows any sign of ever having any SSI applied. They were obviously worn mid-60s as the first one has full color name and Army tapes and the second has subdued tapes.
seanmc1114 Posted December 16, 2015 Share #28 Posted December 16, 2015 Not sure if this would have been worn in Korea pre-1965 or at Fort Benning in 1965 before the 1st Cav deployed to Vietnam.
seanmc1114 Posted December 16, 2015 Share #29 Posted December 16, 2015 Cold weather shirt. In ten years of collecting, this is the only badged example I could find with color insignia. When I was in during the 1980's, these were typically worn with just the US Army insignia, and sometimes a name tape. One of my biggest regrets in collecting is a fully-patched wool shirt like this I had several years ago with what I assume was very high quality Korean theater made subdued full Colonel and Artillery collar insignia, 2nd Infantry Division SSI, name and Army tapes and basic jump wings and CIB. It was beautiful but I foolishly removed removed all of the insignia. Being a full colonel, he was probably the 2nd ID artillery commander and I probably could have traced the owner if I had kept it intact. I don't even have any pictures of it that I'm aware of. patches Posted December 17, 2015 Share #30 Posted December 17, 2015 That's a real strange one, note the Cav and Ranks are Merrowed Edge, not seen on uniforms before 1968-69. One would say it was worn in country at that time, but what about the tapes? Still maybe worn in country 69 etc and it's one of those rare anomalies or it's of course a put together ach who knows . One Scheiderer listed on the base, a draftee, it ain't him. Martinjmpr Posted December 17, 2015 Share #34 Posted December 17, 2015 When did enlisted rank move from the sleeve to the collar? I know it was after the switch from full color to subdued but how long after?
e19 Posted December 17, 2015 Share #35 Posted December 17, 2015 When did enlisted rank move from the sleeve to the collar? I know it was after the switch from full color to subdued but how long after? As I recall, we went to Black/OD cut-edge chevrons on the sleeves mid 67 and then switched to pin on collar rank late in the year or in 68. patches Posted December 17, 2015 Share #36 Posted December 17, 2015 Here's a topic that goes a ways explaining the color vs subdued, you'll see a July 1970 date for all subdued, this is correct, no full color stuff after that date was permitted. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/197601-when-did-the-army-begin-using-black-gold-us-army-tapes/ Subdued stuff in the RVN however was different, those things started to be seen as early as late 65, maybe a little earlier, here it was either dyed color insignia, or theater made, it was in the late summer early fall of 1966 that the first U.S. made machine embroidered on "Twill" shoulder patches and Enlisted men's sleeve ranks start to be seen there, plus the Army in the RVN was always ahead of the game in regards to subdued collar EM ranks, that starts little by little in mid to late 67, here the Army decided it was a good idea, and decides to adopt them eventually Army Wide. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/197601-when-did-the-army-begin-using-black-gold-us-army-tapes/

Obviously not in my collection, but here are a couple of cool photos of Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient Roger Donlon wearing a fully patched wool shirt as commandant of the 2nd Infantry Division's Advanced Combat Training Academy in Korea in 1967. gwb123 Posted December 20, 2015 Author Share #44 Posted December 20, 2015 Here is a field jacket that I rescued from a vintage clothing store. One of our members researched this and the individual was a Vietnam veteran. Note the cut edge 101st patch. The US Army tape was missing, but there was an unused one folded into one of the pockets. I have to admit to avoiding field jackets as they took up additional storage space.
