RCleary171 Posted September 1, 2012 #1 Posted September 1, 2012 Hello Group, This seems to be the best place to post my work. These aren't models but they are on topic artistic renderings. Here is a sketch of a recon group on a hill in Vietnam. Bob
manayunkman Posted September 1, 2012 #2 Posted September 1, 2012 Bob you have a talent. Amazing color draws you in and, though it is war, there seems to be a peace about it. I hope you post more. M
RCleary171 Posted September 2, 2012 Author #3 Posted September 2, 2012 Here is an experiment with ink and watercolors (from a Vietnam War photo).
RCleary171 Posted September 2, 2012 Author #4 Posted September 2, 2012 I took this off of a WWI trench photo. I was surprised to see a soldier wearing a bow tie so I did his portrait. I like the way it came out.
RCleary171 Posted September 2, 2012 Author #5 Posted September 2, 2012 Here I'm trying to stay within my skill level. Monochrome, minimalistic and a bit impressionistic. I can always go back and add more details.
kanemono Posted September 5, 2012 #6 Posted September 5, 2012 Bob, I really like your WWI portrait of the soldier with the bow tie. Very well done. Dick
RCleary171 Posted September 5, 2012 Author #7 Posted September 5, 2012 Thanks Dick - now if I can only get my new stuff to look that good.
snake36bravo Posted September 6, 2012 #8 Posted September 6, 2012 Good to see your stuff which is very reminiscent of actual war art I've seen. Also good to see a fellow artist here. Mind if I add? I did this for my son.
RCleary171 Posted September 6, 2012 Author #9 Posted September 6, 2012 Nice job - is this ink or pencil. Great detail and shadowing. Good to see your stuff which is very reminiscent of actual war art I've seen. Also good to see a fellow artist here. Mind if I add? I did this for my son.
RCleary171 Posted September 6, 2012 Author #10 Posted September 6, 2012 Thought I'd give a Huey a try. I'll need to work on my landscape skills.
snake36bravo Posted September 6, 2012 #11 Posted September 6, 2012 Thought I'd give a Huey a try. I'll need to work on my landscape skills. Really like this one. Your work is really good, very subtle but extremely effective. I choose the army over an art scholarship. While not US we would not have a military were it not for enemies. Ball point pen shaded with my finger.
RCleary171 Posted September 6, 2012 Author #12 Posted September 6, 2012 Here is a recent enemy sketch of my own. The expression is what I attempted to capture (exhaustion, weariness). Your sketch is an excellent rendering of a grim soldier. The detail and shading are very effective. I have a lot to learn and studying works like yours will help.

CNY Militaria Posted September 7, 2012 #14 Posted September 7, 2012 We have some serious talent on this forum! I am following this thread closely. Thanks for posting. Justin
RCleary171 Posted September 7, 2012 Author #15 Posted September 7, 2012 Thank you Jeff and Justin! Here is a sketch I did a few months ago from a photo. I tried to capture the dignity that was afforded to this fallen comrade in no-man's land.
RCleary171 Posted September 7, 2012 Author #16 Posted September 7, 2012 A quick sketch before bed. I tried to capture the weariness but the determination came through.
RCleary171 Posted September 8, 2012 Author #17 Posted September 8, 2012 Here's a study of a WWI battle field (Messines Ridge - 1917) from a photo taken not long after the fighting had stopped.
RCleary171 Posted September 8, 2012 Author #18 Posted September 8, 2012 One last sketch for the night. A US Marine holding a 50 at the ready.
RCleary171 Posted September 8, 2012 Author #19 Posted September 8, 2012 I had painted this the day after I had learned that Neil Armstrong had passed on.
RCleary171 Posted September 10, 2012 Author #20 Posted September 10, 2012 I'm going back to some earlier stuff. Here is a sketch of a WWI staff officer.
snake36bravo Posted September 12, 2012 #21 Posted September 12, 2012 You really are talented as an illustrator. Great additions.
RCleary171 Posted September 16, 2012 Author #23 Posted September 16, 2012 Here is a quick sketch of a WWI US Private.
Hank Posted September 16, 2012 #24 Posted September 16, 2012 hi Bob, nice Job on those colored sketches, you definetly have talent. How long have you been doing them now? Many years ago I was a illustrator in the army stationed at West Point doing a variety of art and have always admired someone else creating "war art" of their own.
RCleary171 Posted September 16, 2012 Author #25 Posted September 16, 2012 Hello Hank, I've been experimenting with pencil, ink and watercolors for little more than two years. What type illustrations have you done? It would be great to see some of your work. Bob
