Any thoughts on these apparent English made pilot wings? I’m a bit dubious of them to be honest.

It’s a really nice medal and rather scarce in that configuration .   Certainly not “cheap” but I’ve seen collectors spend  $482.52 on other far more inferior items.  And this is coming from someone who has memories of buying dozens of Victory Medals throughout the 1960’s and 70’s on a regular basis for 5 bucks or so each. In recent years it took me awhile to realize I should pay $35 for common 2 bar VM’s.  Finding them for that price these days is a rare event.   One day $482.52 will seem “cheap” for a medal like this one.    Paying a premium for quality usually turns out well.

As mentioned previously, the "lazy s" marking is a combination of a D and a G if you look at it sideways. I've got a few of them pictured in a thread a little farther down titled Detroit Gasket cut down scabbards. I've kept an eye out and found some examples both crimped and reused tabs on the throat. The early cut downs had tabs break when reusing, so they started crimping the throats on.

He sounds like a great man who went through incredible experiences.   R.I.P.

You do see a wide range of fabrics used, as mentioned they were private purchase items, so usually a higher grade of wool was used and a virtual rainbow of OD green. I would get a visor hat, but a nice overseas hat with officer rank would be good too. and not to toot my own horn, but Toot!  we do have a visor cap available: https://militarycollectorshq.com/store-catalog/ols/products/wwi-us-army-officers-visor-hat-item-4283

Oliver Herbert berg served in the 91st infantry division and was a radio operator in the field.    edward C bell served in pattons 3rd army but no info on what division he served in.   john mark Martin served in Hastings naval ammunition depot in Nebraska and was 2nd in command there.   maybe this will help?
