Just dug out my old shirts. Turns out, my perma press shirt (center) is the most faded. Wore it from 1979 to 1982 in numerous field exercises, where it was subjected to rain, sun and numerous washings. The field laundries we used on month-long 2 AD FTX's probably had the harshest effect on the material. I never wore the OG 107 in the field, as it would look terrible after wearing it for a week or so straight. The MSC collar branch insignia I wore (OG 107 shirt on left) has the obsolete late 1960's "colored" MS letters in the circle. Went to all black soon after (my BN Cmdr pointed it out once, but didn't seem to have a problem with it. ). As an insignia collector even way back then, I liked wearing it. The BDU I have still has good color. The black on this one didn't yet fade to purple. -

That's from an 'incident' in 1979 when the RANGER sliced through a Liberian tanker in the Straits of Malacca. They returned to Subic for temporary repairs prior to making for the naval shipyard at Yokosuka to be drydocked. 04/04/79: The USS Ranger (CV-61) sustains substantial damage in a collision with the Liberian tanker Fortune near the eastern approaches to the Strait of Malacca. There are no injuries and the Ranger heads toward Subic Bay while the tanker, holed in the port side from the main deck to the waterline, is towed to Singapore. On 20 April the Ranger voyages to Yokosuka, Japan, after completing interim repairs to her bow. -->> The USS Ranger's Sticky Collision -

After the sad loss of Tudor last year his jeep has sat in the garage and couldn't be started. Yesterday I got to pay a visit to see his wife and parents with the object of trying to get it sorted out for them. It wouldn't turn over more than once, wouldn't fire up and wouldn't with the crank either. Ran through all the basics, checked and cleaned where required then moved onto the next stage . Once I knew I had a good spark, good fuel to the carb and after couple of turns on the crank handle ( battery was not holding charge ) it fired up and ran. First time since before Tudors passing that it had run. An emotional moment for us all , so glad I could help, last time I did anything on a jeep was back in 1987, so wasn't sure I could help, but you don't forget, just don't bend as easily as I did back then. I bought the “perma press” fatigues at the Ft Dix PX in 1979 while still an ROTC cadet. Bought a set of very used OG 107 fatigues soon after arriving at Ft Hood in 1980. They were a bit faded and looked great when starched like a board. But, as stated above, would never mix and match the two types. Would have looked terrible. And then the Elvis BDU’s came along in 1982, so I never wore the OD fatigues again. Those first issue BDU’s were SO hot in the Texas summer. And, the sun and washing turned the black portion of the camo to a shade of purple. Looked terrible. I should add I wore the same fatigue “baseball” cap with both the OG 107 fatigues and the newer “perma press” type. -

For reference. A large / broad shield pattern Dallas wing sold at auction (CNY Militaria & Collectibles) today for $2600. Attached are several screenshots. I tried to add the link to the auction, but was unsuccessful. -
