Interesting! So this has it listed as M166, et., losing the  (experimental?) prefix. Any dates? Any information on actual issue or use? Because of it's size I would assume survival but I've never seen it listed as a vest or kit issued item. (Then again I never saw the Army Data Sheet.) Thanks again for the info!

I had one of these at some point in the early 1990s.  Had a civilian style internal aluminum frame.  Would have been a nice cold weather pack, it was HUGE.  Allowed you to carry way too much.  Found them well made and easy enough to get to gear inside with top and bottom openings. at then end of the day the large ALICE was more easily used for most situations.

Wow! I am so saddened to hear about Eric's passing. He was always nice to me and someone who I could rely on for help when I needed it. A sure loss for the community!

This pack was generally issued as part of the CFP-90 or Combat Patrol Pack system, which had gone through testing in the late 80s and is related to Lowe Alpine's military hiking packs (like the LOCO and Vector pack systems). The Patrol Pack would hook into the front of the CFP-90 using the webbing and faster clips, but soldiers and Marines that got the system often utilized just the Patrol Pack as the CFP-90 itself was large and overly cumbersome.   These saw use alongside ALICE throughout the 90s and into the early 2000s, though the ALICE and the MOLLE II Rucksacks were far more successful and liked than the CFP-90 and the accompanying Patrol Pack.
