Re: the first box pictured. I have seen 19th Century cartridge boxes that were apparently sold as surplus and then marketed to the public after having some sort of decorative emblem added. Could be the case here. -

Nice one! I believe this is the one that sold on eBay recently? I don't know of any actual sources outlining this modification. It definitely did not happen in large numbers and was not done by a specific unit. Based on how early the shell is and the use of an interwar M1917A1 liner, I would imagine this would have been an early war modification. I have seen similar modifications using a British or Canadian MkII liner. Yours looks period done to me and it is a nice oddball to add to your collection. -

No clue on the cap box decoration, but the box is original. The second box is an original Civil War era pistol ammunition box. The third box is a reproduction .58 rifle musket cartridge box. Both box plates are reproduction. -
