My rifle has a star over the Cranston Arms stamping. The small five-pointed star above the "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." stamp indicates that this M1941 Johnson rifle was inspected by the Dutch Netherlands Purchasing Commission circa August 1940. -

MARIETTA CHONG ENG January 24, 1923 October 24, 2024 Marietta was born in Honolulu, the sixth of seven children and the last surviving member of the family of Chong Sum Wing, founder of Wing Coffee Company. Following graduation from McKinley High School in 1940, she attended the University of Hawaii and the University of Pennsylvania School of Allied Medical Professionals where she graduated with a degree in Occupational Therapy. Thereafter, she joined the U.S. Navy as an Ensign in the United States Naval Reserves Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services (WAVES). Following officer training, she was stationed at Naval Hospitals in California, first at Mare Island, then at Corona. She worked with amputee soldiers returning from the front lines of WW II, helping them rehabilitate to everyday living. During World War II, she decided to join the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) [8] because her brother was already serving in the Navy. After she was trained as a physiotherapist in the Navy, she was assigned to work at the U.S. Naval Hospital on Male Island, California. Marine Lieutenant Marietta Chong Eng was responsible for caring for the wounded soldiers who lost their hands and feet in the war, helping them regain their ability to take care of themselves, and teaching them how to deal with daily life. She felt proud whenever she put on the military uniform. Whether on the streets of San Francisco or at the naval base, she attracted people’s attention and envy. But one time when she was crossing a busy street in New York City, a young hooligan pointed at her and exclaimed in surprise: “Look, a Chinaman.” She thought that the shock must be from seeing a Chinese person wear a military uniform. She loved to wear the military uniform and was proud to wear the military uniform, so she even wore her military uniform at her wedding. Marietta Chong Eng settled in Oakland, California after the war and gave birth to three children. She was a physical therapist for many years. Im not sure if this post is still active. I inherited a bunch of family medals from the Vietnam war and the Spanish American war. One of these medals is marked "Cuba" USA" on a cross and has the number 71340. It would be really cool to know the recipient of the medal, I am related to them somehow. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! -

. US Forces WWII repatriation camps. At the end of WWII there were nine camps assembled for the repatriation of troops back to the US, these nine camps were named after American cigarettes. Yesterday at a street flea market I found an English language book with the stamp of the Phillip Morris camp stamped inside the front cover. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigarette_Camp Norman D.
