In spring of 86 we turned in our M1 helmets and exchanged for the new Kevlars. I turned in an old M1 I had, and I kept my issue M1. This thing was brand new when it was issued to me in 1982 Ingersol shell I think. Low dome. I used to sit on it sometimes and used it to wash up and shave in. Never cooked anything in my steel. It ruins them. -

Last week I had a company outing so no work was done on the jeep, but yesterday I was back at it. It was raining so I did a little more cleaning of the block inside the garage, then carried on with the steering box. It was filled with grease which is the wrong lubricant as it is too thick and the worm wheel pushes it away instead of getting lubed, and originally SAE90-grade oil is prescribed. It can leak a bit then though, which is probably the reason the filler plug on top was replaced by a grease zerk. I opened the box and scooped out as much grease as I could. I didn't want to loosen or take out any internal parts as the condition of there is excellent and everything is set correctly, so after cleaning out as much grease as I could and rinsing the inside I made a paper gasket, applied some gasket sealer on both sides and closed the box again. I then filled it with 80W90 gear oil and left it in the vice till next week, to see if it will leak. Funny enough it doesn't have an oil seal at the base of the steering column. As said before it turned out to be a GPW steering box, and I came across some more 'F' marks that luckily will mostly be hidden from view 😋 -

. Ste Mere Eglise this morning, RAINING !!!! I went for coffee this morning in Ste Mere Eglise there were rain showers off and on, I was laughing inwardly at people on adding tables looking at the rain landing on the Jeep and looking at me thinking he's driving that Jeep with no windscreen or rain protection. Little did they know that I had snake oil protection on the jeep. Norman D. Landing, Forum Normandy Correspondent, May 25 2O25. …. -
