Rank badge on the fathers uniform is for expert rifleman.   Son apparently got the apprentice seaman's top that came without the cuff stripes.  This apparently happened at some point during WW2.

Please refrain from making non-constructive and false commentary. The image is of General Ray Barker. Your personal opinion is not fact and in this case is dead wrong. The man in the photo is not a poser and a simple internet search proves the point. As a new member please make sure to respect the forum to which you belong as well as the people who are on it.

when the 199th inf bde left viet nam, headed for ft benning in oct 70, i was one of the troops assigned to accompany the flags for the ceremony. we were taken right out of our assigned posts, and right to hold baggage with all our stuff. since the brigade was leaving everything behind for the arvn's, no one seemed to care if you threw some thing that was issued to you right into the box. i didn't see anyone keeping the old steel pot, but i sure kept my issue MP brassard. i still have it to this day. we came home on a C141 star lifter wearing jungle fatigues.

I recently got an M1 helmet directly from a local Special Forces vet. He said the soldiers were allowed to keep their M1 helmets right after the switch to PASGT helmets.

Found this 1942 dated Troxel canteen cover at one of the yard sales I stopped at today. It's in nice shape and I think it's not one of the commonly found makers.
