Thanks, The Forrestal was a CVA on that cruise so No ASW squadrons but the ASW group 56 had VS 24 and VS 27  in the early 60's he has a VS 24 patch on his jacket i can't correlate the other patch to VS 27   the search continues   I appreciate the help at least I think its narrowed down to VS squadrons.

Thanks for the reply SlufStuff, I think I made the right decision in not buying. Yes it seems that way to me as well, the muzzle ring/pommel being too small is a staple of foreign made bayonets for the M16. The sheath also doesn't seem military style to me.   The reason I thought this might be connected to the military (like a prototype) is because there was a similar looking bayonet on eBay a while back marked KATON. The seller of that one said his father was in the military and collected high end knives/bayonets. I could not verify what the KATON was so I held off on buying but it sold for around $200 if I'm not mistaken. Unusually enough, that KATON bayonet seemed made for a 16" barrel and a carbine gas system instead of what bayonets are typically made to fit for the military (14.5 carbine and 20 rifle).

Hi all,   trying to figure out what patch my grandfather has on in this pic. We don’t know much about his unit.    I do know he was with the 446th fighter squadron at one point.    thanks for any help and sorry this is the best picture I have.

There's a good chance that her records were lost in the 1973 fire at the personnel records Center. You could try to see if they have them https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records   Post her name here, maybe someone can track her down.

Hi all,   first time poster. Have loved reading all things on this site.    I picked up this practice grenade at a flea market. My understanding is it’s an MK-2 or M21 practice grenade WW2 era? Looking for any insight into what I actually have. There appears to be an engraving of a “6” and some other letters or numbers I can’t make out on the side.   thank you!

Found this, it's Navy but not sure of patch.   Looks like anti-submarine warfare.  https://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/262100-cagleco-g-1/
