I have a pretty good record of my ancestor's service in the Confederacy from his application for a pension (granted). He apparently figured out the way to be released from Point Lookout prison was to join the U. S. troops who were sent to the Western Plains. Where are records for that service maintained? All suggestions will be appreciated. -

I have a pretty detailed history of my ancestor's colorful service in the Confederacy from his application for a pension. However, I have not been able to find more about the circumstances surrounding his court martial or other administrative proceeding that resulted in loss of pay in 1864. Interestingly, shortly before this he was shot in the leg and admitted to Chimborazo Hospital. When he returned to active duty, he "fell behind" (his words) and was captured by Union troops, then sent to Point Lookout. To be released from there, he joined the US Army and was sent to South Dakota. These are a few items from his service file during his time in the 30th Battalion Virginia Sharpshooters. Any suggestions will be appreciated. -

For the 3" wings, the Pilot and Aircrew versions tend to pop up the most frequently, followed by the Bombardier, Aerial Gunner and Navigator. The Service Pilot and Liaison Pilot wings also pop up pretty routinely. The Observer wings are tough to find, and I have yet to see a "normal" two-piece Glider Pilot come available. In general the 2" and 1.5" wings pop up about as frequently as the corresponding 3" wings, with the exceptions of the three letter wings which I have yet to find any examples of yet. Note there are also 3" Flight Engineer and Aerial Gunner wings made from different shieldless base wings, but I believe those are all from a different manufacturer (possibly LeVelle). -

All you needed to get a crusher was $$$ Any officer in the Army no matter what branch was entitled to wear one. Most of the officers who got one were AAF. -
