Interesting list, Gerard, thanks for posting. Also an interesting concept: you are not listing actual ammo boxes, cans, packing boxes (crates) but you are closer to listing the contents of containers. But whatever, please include me as a "fan" of ammunition containers of all types. -

In May of 2021 Daniel Ellsberg leaked another classified document he had. Its the Rand paper on the Taiwan straights. This is the Rand report: https://archive.org/details/The1958TaiwanStraitsCrisisADocumentedHistory_201712 This is a declassified US report on air operations for the 2nd Taiwan Straight incident 1958: https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/document/21083-doc-10-taiwan-1958 This is what Ellsberg said about that document "I consulted with my friend Morton Halperin when he began the research for this study, I believe, in 1963. Having participated myself in the Cuban Missile Crisis a few months earlier, I spent most of 1963 and the first half of 1964 doing research on nuclear crises at the RAND corporation in Santa Monica, California, for which Halperin was a consultant. When I joined the Defense Department as a full time employee in August 1964, as special assistant to the assistant secretary of defence for international security affairs (ISA), my purpose was really to pursue my investigation of this subject, in the hopes of reducing the chance of nuclear war in the future. When Halperin completed his study at the end of 1966, My draft notes on the offshore islands crisis of 1963 were a product of my consultation with Halperin in February 63. In the mid 60s the crisis over Quemoy and Matsu, Offshore Islands in the Taiwan States, which is variously described as the (Offshore Islands) (OSI) Crisis, the Quemoy Crisis, or in the title of Halperin’s study the 1958 Taiwan Straits crisis- was not generally perceived as having been a nuclear crisis, despite the fears expressed publicly by politicians and commentators that it could possibly have erupted into nuclear war. What Halperin discovered in his classified (Top Secret) study, was that the nuclear dimensions of this confrontation were taken very seriously by the Eisenhower administration, and in particular the military advisers and commanders involved. Indeed, Christian Herder, who succeeded John Foster Dulles as secretary of state, was reported to have said later, “The Cuban Missile Crisis is often described as the first serious nuclear crisis, those of us who lived through the Quemoy crisis definitely regarded that as the first serious nuclear crisis.” The reasons for this will be obvious every few pages of this study. -Daniel Ellsberg" -

. I have always been interested in animals in military service, and found photos of these metal canisters on another thread on the forum, I have NEVER encountered any details of these being officially manufactured for pigeon use either British or American However looking at the style of the cans it appears to me that they are converted British army biscuit containers, I could be wrong but it's worth more investigation. These belonged to Sgt. Henrietta Burndl. She was USMC from 50-54 and worked in the motor pool. -

. Hi mikie, I salvaged a lot of ' historical or old ' items over the years, I grabbed these old 40's galvanised watering cans at various times for garden decoration, I generally keep them topped up with water and the birds stand on the rim and drink water from them. The can in the third photo is actually a German manufactured can but undated, possibly 40's similar to all the others. Compare the styles and shapes to the one seen in the wartime photo taken at the water-pump in Ste Marie du Mont 1944 Norman D. Landing, Forum Normandy Correspondent, May 05 2O25. …. -

It's for comm's, the mic goes into that center plug with the stem at 4 o'clock. Bombers in the early years had the chest worn push to talk system with the throat mic and the headset or the flying cap speaker set up. At low altitude when oxygen was not used you see pilots talking on the a hand mike. It's hard enough to fly at altitude and have to pull your mask off to talk on the hand mic if people couldn't understand you.
