Salvage Sailor Posted March 11, 2019 Share #3860 Posted March 11, 2019 Nice one Sean, CENTAG Order of Battle 1989 - Prior to the end of the cold war and the reunification of Germany, NATO truly had a massive combat structure along the West German frontier as detailed here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CENTAG_wartime_structure_in_1989

Yes this will be the 1st Battalion 511th Infantry (Airborne) it would be reflagged as the 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 8th Cavalry in July 1965. mysteriousoozlefinch Posted March 15, 2019 Share #3867 Posted March 15, 2019 What's the date on this Ozzle? This would be sometime after May 1942 and before September 1945 when the VRM was stood down. That huge patch was rolled out with the original uniform regulations for the VRM (Virginia went a different route than a brassard for whatever reason) which was intended to go on either a civilian coat/jacket or a regulation specified forest green coverall. I don't know when the red/green SSI was issued since I've only seen it on a modern ebay sale uniform khaki blouse (still with canvas chest patch). Considering it has the state seal on it I'd say around the same time the Virginia Protective Force became the Virginia State Guard and made a similar change to their SSI (see an earlier post I made in this thread) in Augustish of 1944. Note the wear of the 17th Cavalry oval behind his Air Assault Badge. Would this be an authorized wearing of an oval? My reading of current regulations is that ovals or "background trimmings" are only authorized for organizations designated (by structure, equipment, and mission) "Airborne" or "Air Assault" by HQDA. My guess would be he's in a HHT level Air Cavalry RECON Platoon, but one would think this unit would be a platoon with in the Air Cav Troop of the 11th ACR, perhaps the unit HHT 1st Sq is in error? I thought about that, but I don't think such a unit would be designated as Air Assault and certainly wouldn't be Airborne. Plus the oval is not technically authorized for the 11th ACR. My guess would be it was just worn because it resembled the 11th ACR SSI.
