Interesting, but I don't believe the shako would have ever been worn with that bullion patch, at least not by regulation.  It looks like someone placed a blazer patch on the shako for some reason, possibly for display after graduation.  Same thing with the red plume.  Come to think of it, I wonder if it was used as part of some humorous tradition at West Point?  We've got to have some West Pointers on the forum who could shed some light on this.

Would you mind if I move this to the 'Military Education & Training' board? This is very interesting item and you posted very nice pictures!

Agree, very odd.  I have never seen that bullion crest on a hat nor have I seen a red plume.

The class crest is worn on the blazer.

Dad was a West Pointer class of 58. I always wanted his tar bucket, my grandmother threw it out long ago. But I still have these.20210406_140844.jpg.257cbe49d452640eab753aa5ced384b4.jpg20210406_141101.jpg.7a65ac4162bb1948e37bc9efcdd2ca7b.jpg

I am USMA ‘85.  Tarbucket always had gold large cap badge, about twice the size of one on gray and white service caps.  Pre-1923 the helmet faced wearer’s left (right as viewed). In 1923 the helmet was reversed and has continued to this day.   I have a couple of pre-1923 cap badges, one for the service cap, smaller than current version, and larger one for tar bucket.   The tar bucket itself is apparently post 1923 as the chinstrap buttons are later style.  I’ll try to grab some photos soon.

Also, the plume (aka Gorilla dick) is black only.   The short Fuzzy one for lower ranks.  The feather plumes were for cadet officers.   The higher the position the taller the feathered plume.

First picture was issued in 1981. Note helmet face viewer’s left/wearers right.  Second picture is a crest from pre-1923 issue as helmet is reversed on crest.  Black pom is same, though the really old one is missing the brass base.
