Salvage Sailor Posted December 19, 2015 Share #126 Posted December 19, 2015 Came across some mixed in with my USN lighter collection USS ESCAPE (ARS-6) Diver class salvage ship, transferred to the USCG in 1978 USS TAKELMA (ATF-113) Abnaki class fleet tug Nice blue-filled lettering USS JAMES M. GILLISS (MHC-13) ex-YMS-262 Easy to date this one, she was converted to a mine hunter and redesignated MHC-13 from 1955 to 1958

dpcsdan Posted December 20, 2015 Author Share #130 Posted December 20, 2015 Hi Dan Any chance you can help me time line the USS Bennington Badge? Thanks Could use a closeup of the reverse. It's earlier because of the inclusion of "PO".

dpcsdan Posted December 21, 2015 Author Share #132 Posted December 21, 2015 Reverse photo Well this is one of those oddities...I also thought this was likely a late 1940 to mid1950s badge, but the Bennington was only designated a CVS from 1959 to 1970. Even the clasp is an earlier style, as is the designation of "PO" in my first review of this badge. Closer to WWII usage on other badges.
Jay V Posted December 21, 2015 Share #133 Posted December 21, 2015 Dan So I assume then that this would date around 1959?And may I ask what " PO" means? Thanks Jay

dpcsdan Posted December 22, 2015 Author Share #137 Posted December 22, 2015 Dan So I assume then that this would date around 1959?And may I ask what " PO" means? Thanks Jay Petty Officer, as in Police PO, or, in this case petty officer MAA. In my active duty, all MAAs had to be petty officers, no non-rated MAAs in those days. Same with Shore Patrol. dpcsdan Posted January 3, 2016 Author Share #143 Posted January 3, 2016 Any member have a photo of pre-1940 MAA brassard? I have a velcro attached example, likely 1960s.
Cobra 6 Actual Posted January 3, 2016 Share #144 Posted January 3, 2016 As an aside, keep in mind that Velcro was first developed in 1941, patented in 1955, and commonly commercially available in the 1960's. Any use of it by our military was PROBABLY no earlier than the mid-1960's, if not later.
