Speaking of waiting for just the right time to use a good joke on someone, my barber did exactly that to me.  Being old and bald, I told my barber that he needed to give me a discount on my hair cut because there just wasn’t that much to cut, to which he replied, “….no I actually need to charge you more because I have to search for it.”  Now, my barber had been waiting for just the right smart Alec come along to use that line, and on that day years ago, that happened to be me.

Unissued 1943 Folding Shovel Covers.

Two unissued shovel covers both dated the same 1943 by two different manufacturers using different o.d. shades.

Hi Ken, I love the '2 tone' colours of OD. I know you have always been a fan too. The number of conversations I've had with people who only want light tan as "dark OD is late war".... not!

Here is an example for sale today - credit to 'Paratrooper' shop in France. A classic example of mix n match!! Love it, with early hangar and 1943 dated!

Cheers Graham

Difficulty now getting the correct look 6 Volt batteries for Jeeps.

due to less and less vehicles now using six volt batteries then fewer and fewer manufacturers are making the style needed for the correct look under the hood of a wartime Jeep.  Unable to obtain anything locally and now more costly to import from the UK since Brexit a local friend bought a localised six volt battery without the two long flat lead connecting bars on the top cover.  He then drained and washed out his old battery and chopped out the two flat bars and gorilla glued them onto the top of his new battery, to the uninitiated they would be unaware that this is what he has done.   Looks correct now when lifting the hood.

What a great idea!! I may well do the same with my new battery! (I haven't re-cycled the old one yet).

The person I got this from states it was worn in WW2 by an American soldier.

It looks Dutch to me and I think it’s post war:

Any European participants know anything about this?

Yes it's Dutch. No idea what it is though, or if it even is military.

Beach Racing Weekend . . . . . . . . . . .

A bunch of us attended a beach racing weekend, had a lot of fun, at one stage I noticed that a friend had let his daughter take his car on the races so I took the opportunity to climb aboard and going her,  it was a Ford with a five litre block and she was bending the pedal to the metal.  When we came back to park up everyone was having a laugh and smirking  while looking at me, apparently it was the daughters first attempt at beach racing  and they thought it funny . . . . . . . . . . . .

Carentan store fronts decoration for 80th Anniversary

A few more of the store windows one window has decorated in the style of a 1940's French household.  Another one features a few pieces of American memorabilia including a field find steel helmet with a rifle round through the frontal area and holes from corrosion over the rear of the helmet.

Ste Mere Eglise supermarket ' SuperU ' going to town on decoration of the store for D-Day week

Just returned from buying groceries at the supermarket in Ste Mere Eglise,  and they have dressed their refrigerator counters as Jeeps, and a fully dressed paratrooper sat on a store shelf.

There is a lot of cheap and tacky commercialised products all over Normandy being sold for the anniversary, but I was pleased to see these quality cut-out silhouettes in strong 1.5 mm metal and powder coated paint finish, would possibly make ideal wind-vanes silhouettes on chimneys or garages especially the C-47 one . . . . . . . .

I grabbed the last Jeep one on the display, maybe they will re-stock in a few days and I can grab another one for my grandson.

Time to join in 1944 -  2024 decorating the house.

#1… Take three cans of paint ( most popular colours ) and cut board to size.

#2… Spray board and waterproof

#3… Fit board to old Jeep grille from my shoebox

#4… Hang grille on front of building ( run test hang, reshape hooks for better positioning )
