cutiger83 Posted May 13, 2012 #1 Posted May 13, 2012 There are two recent releases based on the lives of two characters from the HBO Series "The Pacific". Has anyone ready either one of these books? I think I am going to get both of them. One is titled "Battle-Ground Pacific A Marine Rifleman's Combat Odyssey in K/3/5" By Sterling Mace The other is "Red Blood, Black Sand Fighting Alongside John Basilone from Bootcamp to Iwo Jima" by Chuck Tatum Thanks, Kat
doyler Posted May 13, 2012 #2 Posted May 13, 2012 Kat Havent seen these yet.Got to ,any others to read first!!! Currently reading THE PACIFIC by Ambrose
cutiger83 Posted May 13, 2012 Author #3 Posted May 13, 2012 Got to many others to read first!!! I do understand that! My stack of "to read" books is MUCH larger than my stack of "completed" books! But I LOVE to read good books! Maybe when I retire I can put a dent in this stack. ....Kat
Jim Baker Posted May 13, 2012 #4 Posted May 13, 2012 But I LOVE to read good books! Maybe when I retire I can put a dent in this stack. ....Kat That's my plan. I also have the bad habit of reading 3 or 4 at the same time.......
hbtcoveralls Posted May 13, 2012 #5 Posted May 13, 2012 Kat, Absolutely must read "Helmet for my pillow" by Robert Leckie. Still in print and just as good today as it always was. Tom Bowers
bobgee Posted May 13, 2012 #6 Posted May 13, 2012 Kat - Don't forget "Islands of the Damned" by former Sgt. R.V. Burgin who was Sledge's Squad Leader. Excellent first-hand account! He's still with us and a great guy! Google his name for lots of info. Semper Fi......Bobgee
Jim Baker Posted May 13, 2012 #7 Posted May 13, 2012 Kat - Don't forget "Islands of the Damned" by former Sgt. R.V. Burgin who was Sledge's Squad Leader. Excellent first-hand account! He's still with us and a great guy! Google his name for lots of info. Semper Fi......Bobgee That's one I want to pick up. And don't forget that Leckie wrote a few other books. People don't often mention his account of WWII, "Delivered From Evil". If you have wanted to read a one volume history of the war but have shied away from those large intimidating books, this is the one for you. Well written, and very "readable".
uplandmod Posted May 13, 2012 #8 Posted May 13, 2012 The Tatum book is a reissue from the 90s, I plan to pick it up shortly. Should be the best book on Bastone as he actually knew him, i believe Tatum is still alive living in Sacremento. Leonardo
cutiger83 Posted May 14, 2012 Author #9 Posted May 14, 2012 Tom, I read "Helmet For My Pillow" and loved it! That is why I want to read more. Bobgee, I recently bought "Islands of the Damned". It may have just moved up the stack of books to read! Jim, I will check into "Delivered From Evil". Thanks everyone!....Kat
zepher11 Posted May 14, 2012 #10 Posted May 14, 2012 Kat, Absolutely must read "Helmet for my pillow" by Robert Leckie. Still in print and just as good today as it always was. Tom Bowers I read Eugene Sledge's book which I thought was totally awesome. I now have "Helmet for My Pillow" by Leckie, but have not read it yet. Glad to hear that it is a good one. I think I will start that next. Zeph
Garandomatic Posted May 15, 2012 #11 Posted May 15, 2012 I read "I'm Staying With My Boys" about Basilone. It was good, but was written in the 1st person if I recall. Kinad odd, but seemed well done.
