Rare Patches - Bring Out Some Photos

My $.02. Not sure of the rarity but I like to think some of them are unique. I took a shot of the whole Riker so I will point out some of the highlights for me. Some of the others are not so rare or unique.

A silk variation of the 1st Cav Div; top right 2 variations of the CBI

Several bullion as you can see, for me I categorize them as unique because of the bullion variation. In so many cases it changes the common patch to something special.

A great silk version of the 3d ID and 2 Tank Destroyer variations 4 and 8 wheel variations.

Theater made Constabulary patch I like because it was the predecessor to my regiment which is below right...2 ACR. They are 2 versions of the same era patch although the more worn one was a gift from Allan Henderson before I departed for the Regiment after OBC.

Again not exceedingly rare: 1st CAV Former Wartime SSI with the horse head facing opposite direction. Theater made, I got this from one of my 1st CAV friends that provided convoy security for us.

2 Iraq National Guard patches from the 36th BN/40th BDE. They were one of the first units reprganozed under the new INY and were training on the other side of the concertina wire from my camp. Literally the only thing seperating our locations was a single strand of wire. Got these with a bunch of uniforms and equipment when they relocated the training area to Taji.

and a brother company

and this one for the 738th MP Bn

post-622-1213895957.jpg

and a real MASH unit, not some b.s. TV or movie made by rock sucking commies

post-622-1213896127.jpg

and here is my favorite patch in my collection. It's a Disney design, there are only two known to be in captivity, and they did a heck of job at Dibrugarh, India. This is for the 758th Railway Shop Bn. It shows Jiminy Cricket, dressed like a civilian engineer, putting some oil into a broken down steamer. The GI who inked these up on leather for the battalion gave it to me.

In 14 months, the battalion repaired more than 4700 cars, converted 132 boxcars into low sided gondolas, and 46 boxcars into refrigerator cars and changed others into snack cars. They added several thousands sets of brakes to more cars and added vacuum brake systems to others. They repaired boilers, rebuilt fireboxes, and straigthened out railcars damaged in accidents. All this wrok was it ensure the ROBs in the CBI could get the supplies to the airbases on the west side of the The Hump, so they could be flown over to the Nationalist Chinese forces. The ROBs also provided rail transport for Merrill's Marauders and MTF.

The MRS GIs were not deified as have been airborne units, but throughout all theaters, especially in the ETO, they got the supplies and men through to turn the direction of the battle. Kinda hard to fight w/o ammo, food, etc.

The following patch is the rarest in my collection. It is the last design of the SOG B Co. Exploitation Force CCC, Kontum. This patch was made three or four months before the company was disbanded. Only six patches were made!

I dont have nearly the great stuff you guys do, but sometimes some goodies come my way.

This is an english made 93rd BG patch.

This is a CBI-made 436th BS patch. It is supposed to be a cowboy riding a bronco, but looks like a Raj on a goat...hehe.

It is on raw silk.

Also from this group was a very nice CBImade multi-piece leather 10th AAF patch.

Here are some interesting civilian flight instructor patches that you dont see very often. The top one is for NAS Corpus Christi, the bottom one is for Wilson and Bonfils Flying School.

I don't know how many of these patches exist today and if it is rare....would be nice to know the "story behind the patch's design"...

As with most of these novelty patches, their meanings are lost to time (and the people who wore them). I can fill in a few of the blanks. On the old KD (Known Distance) ranges, there was a pit crew who raised and lowered the targets. After they scored the target (and pasted over the bullet holes); they would show the holes (with a disk on a long pole), so the shooter could see where the rounds struck, in relation to their sight picture. There was also a long pole with a red flag, known as Maggie's Drawers. If the pit crew waved it - it meant you missed the whole freaking target. This signal brought HUGE displeasure from the First Sergeant and Company commander (who then usually threatened the poor shot with range quals on Sunday AM).

Looking at this patch - it seems to say the 1960 24th Group was not known for their expert marksmanship, lol. As far as the fraulein - I'd read it one of two ways....... they either "borrowed" her drawers for the red flag; or perhaps their accuracy was so bad, their shots escaped the range fan and struck Maggie in the drawers?

What a great thread! I'm seeing patches I won't see anywhere else. My thanks to all the contributors.

Here are some patches for the 2 USMC squadrons aboard the USS Gilbert Islands CVE-107, one of the 4 all-Marine escort carriers of WW2. The one on the left for VMTB-143 'The Rocket Raiders' was designed by Alex Raymond, creator of Flash Gordon. It gets my vote for most artistic patch of WW2. The right one is for VMF-512, a Disney designed patch. Both are gifts from squadron pilots.

The 'Bats Outa Hell' 499th BS flew low level gunship missions in B-25s (345th BG 'Air Apaches'). The decal on leather patch is a gift from Vic Tatelman, one of the original cadre. The one on the right was Aussie made for the replacements who reported to the Pacific Theatre.

While not "rare" to some or in the top 100 of others think.gif , these 4 scans show a few of the patches in my collection that are rare / special  to me. Up until the time I joined up here, all of my collection came from garage sales, thrift / surplus stores, gifts and a few local shows thumbsup.gif .

Croix de Guerre

Here is probably one of the only real WWI 92nd Division patches you'll see in awhile. There are lots of them on ebay though,,,,,,they're making them everyday. This is off an ID'd tunic in my collection.

OK, not so rare, but some say it is. You decide.

Andrew

(The 17th was never activated and patches were made in 1943, but not many. Almost all were embroidered)
