This veteran entered training as a naval aviator during WWI. Though the war ended before he completed his training, he did serve two years in the naval reserve. Besides his more legendary career in his preferred vocation, he owned a ranch in Texas and competed in cowboy-esque events.

Just discovered the thread. To keep it going... His WW2 service was no laughing matter. He shot down two enemy planes and was highly decorated. During a strafing mission, he was touched by the finger of fate and he was forced to crash land in a remote area. He is better known for his work after the war in another vast wasteland.

Mix got nixed... I want to guess Jock Ewing but I know that would be wrong.

Any hint on his preferred vocation?

Correct, J! And dittos to the runners up. Looks like Chennault favored a very distinctive style of ball cap.

Erwin - And that's the truth. :D Daniel Hale David flew P-40's with the 49th Fighter Group in the Southwest Pacific. One source states he received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. After the war he entered show business under a different name. In the late 1960's, Daniel Hale David was better known to U.S. television viewers as Dan Rowan of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Tom
