Basilone was in the army before the Marines, it was here in the Army serving in the Pacific mid to late 1930's that he acquired the nickname Manila John.

Thank you, yes, there is a point there. But at the same time doing chaplain isn’t just any impression. You are representing the lord in everything you do when you are at an event in That kit. I hope you know I understand the gravity of portraying a chaplain. Yes I may be young, but I am not that foolish. And yes it is true there would be next to no reenactors  if what you’re saying is the case. I agree. I posted it here because I know it can be a touchy subject. I don’t want to start an argument here, especially on the case of religion because that’s not what the forum is reserved for. So if anyone here wants to talk about it. Please PM me I’d love to here your insight and opinions on the subject.   Gear Fan

The logic that if your didn't actually do it, you can't do an impression of it is absurd.  Carried out, that means that anyone who has not served in the military may not do military impressions.  So, if you go with that, that will winnow out most of the reenactors.  Woh be the reenactor who wants to portray a medic yet has no medical training.  That might "offend" a real physician who has taken the Hippocratic oath.   Those who get bent out of shape about reenacting need to get a grip and realize it's portraying history, that's all.  Just like actors in motion pictures portray themselves in various roles.  Since he never served in the armed forces, should John Wayne not have acted as military personnel in his movies??     To Gear Fanatic:  Just because someone here got "offended" doesn't mean you should give up on your idea.  Please don't be put off from your wanting to portray your impression of a clergy person, medic, combat engineer, military police, and the list goes on.     Steve

Looking for an identification of a set of buttons. They are definitely US Army buttons with the Great Seal but I’m having trouble narrowing down the time frame (though I know it’s 1902+) and the manufacturer.   They are lightweight and remind me of Bakelite but I’m not sure they are. Google says they are “vegetable ivory” but I do not have any experience with that. The backmark is a star and then an arrow with a star on the non-pointed in. I thought a Google image search would ID them quickly but it has come up with nothing except a button collector’s society page that is no longer working.   I know there are hundreds of manufacturers so this may be a needle in a haystack but I figure it doesn’t hurt to ask.   Thanks!

Thanks. I asked for thoughts and I got what I asked for, that was exactly what I was looking for if there was a problem with it. I know there’s a lot of nuances with it so I thought I would ask before I commit. Thank you @Bruce Linz for your thoughts. I don’t see there being a need for any more posts now that it’s settled. Thanks all.

What years were these 2nd pattern jungle jackets issued?  Only today I picked up what appears to be an unissued one at the local swap meet.  I'm not up on the Viet Nam era uniforms as far as when variations were issued. So, I hope someone can chime in on my question. Thanks, Steve
