You are talking about the Official Squadron Insignia-----It was members of the RAF who gave me the information about the Unofficial " Nellie" Mascot insignia as well as the Home Front Forum.   They have a new one now which shows an aggressive elephant

The British are known for a wonderful dry sense of humor, but the backside of an elephant would be a bit much. Yes, the 27th used [the side view] of an elephant as their mascot (their first aircraft was the Martinsyde G.100 "Elephant"), but there were others as well.
