This is a novelty patch that started appearing in the 80's. The Herd is supposed to represent the 173rd Airborne brigade choking the 101st airborne eagle. It was made to look like Vietnamese embroidery but didn't even come close. -

I understand, I guess maybe a better way to put it is I'm trying to figure out if it might have been worn on the ship or something made later like the veteran caps that are around If that makes sense. In this case I looked up the submarine and it seems that it was decommissioned in 1995 but 5.11 tactical started in 2003 so It seems it was made after the submarine was decommissioned. -

Those with a full back are considered early models, those with a hollow back are later models. Nice wing for a nice price. 👍
