For many years these hats were undesirable and very low cost so faking them has to be a more recent trend if they fake them at all. So I think the one you have is period or made soon after the war, why the band is upside down is anyone’s guess. -

The bottom ribbon bar looks to be made of aluminum which is definitely post-war. -

I believe "the unit" you are referring to is the Pacific Military Intelligence Research Section (PACMIRS). Very cool grouping and not something seen often. I work at the museum up here at old Camp Ritchie. We have a couple of items from families and vets related to PACMIRS but it is always cool to see. As you said they would dress up in full Japanese kit and run around the mountains here.
