It depends on the items! For most of the stuff I have, I keep it in my shed away from people. This is because of the radiation emitted, but also the biggest thing when collecting radium, is that it lets off radioactive radon gas. Radon isn't an issue if you have a few watches or clocks, but it is if you have a collection like mine filled with hot items.  With radioactive items, the biggest thing is the activity. I have a decent amount of very low activity items I keep in a display cabinet in my house. That cabinet is undetectable on my most sensitive meters from around 5 feet away. I could spend a month sitting in front of that cabinet and my radiation dose would still be low enough that it isn't a cause for concern. The biggest worry I would have is just the radon gas. I have monitors set up to make sure my levels are in the safe levels (under 4pCi/L). Radon is, I believe, still the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer here in the U.S., so you have to be very careful. Even outside of collecting radium, it's a good idea to check your radon levels! There are actually many, MANY military items back then that used radium in them. To name some; compasses, luminous markers/disks, watches, aircraft dials, aircraft compasses, submarine dials, sextants, deck clocks, exit signs, ropes, infrared viewers, radio transmitters, medical nasal applicators, etc. These are just the things I've learned about over a few years of collecting, so there are many things out there I don't know about! I have obtained most of my items through eBay and military surplus websites! A couple of items, like the rope, were through private collectors. I actually wanted to try making a "buying" post on this forum to see if anyone had some of the items I've been on the lookout for, but I'm not sure if that's allowed and I don't want to get in trouble! Currently, all my stuff is just sitting in boxes in my shed. I am in the process of clearing some space and buying a cabinet to set up a display for them! :^)
