The look like they may have been cast and then ground down to make them less obvious.  Its hard to know for sure, but I see some signs of casting (the little blebs of metal and the like.

Found this today at an estate sale.  Stetson-Ross was a well known Seattle based manufacturer of equipment used in saw mills such as large planers.  Patch measures about 13" across.

I'd say it's "unusual."   We used do this with insignia at The Citadel.  Called "blitzing".  Pour Brasso on a piece of cardboard and then  strongly rub the face of the insignia over and over again on the cardboard.  Pretty soon, the insignia would look like your TD. I recall some of our Army TAC officers at The Citadel doing this with their infantry brass.  When I was in the Army, most officers would just go with the original STA-BRITE or anodized finish and not bother with polishing.   Here is my old blitzed Citadel cap badge compared to one I didn't blitz.  (haven't been polished in 45 years)

On September 25,1919, S.W. Ovitt & L.G. Bowers, both 1st Lieutenants of the Air Service Balloon Section published, THE BALLOON SECTION of the AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCES.   This nearly 300 paged Balloon Companies History book has some really great photo illustrations of Military Aeronaut wearing their wings and other related insignia that I'll share.   Rather than share detailed information regarding the individuals like which unit they are attached the focus is rather on the diversity of the wing types that they had worn.     Enjoy,   John

I wonder if may be he used same cap (with scrambled egg visor) for the 2 ranks he got in the Navy although appears a label where is writtten Commander Lewis P.James  Would be possible to know if his visor is made during his first rank(WW2) in the Navy and he changed label rank or is impossible to know because rank dates are so close since 1943 to 1945 when he became a Commander? May be material and construction are same from WW2 and the next post war years and then is difficult to determinate exactly the hat period.
