There was a label with it that mentioned he was an actor I forgot to mention that originally.

I take the cite below from an abridgement of Volume 4 of Douglas Southall Freeman's biography of Lee, with forward by James mcpherson, p. 92, 1991, Scribner's Sons published it.   The book I'm looking at refers to a letter by Lee to his wife on December 27, 1856 or close to it and that this is what he wrote:       "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. It is idle to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it is a greater evil to the white than to the colored race. While my feelings are strongly enlisted in behalf of the latter, my sympathies are more deeply engaged for the former. The blacks are immeasurably better off here than in Africa, morally, physically, and socially. The painful discipline they are undergoing is necessary for their further instruction as a race, and will prepare them, I hope, for better things. How long their servitude may be necessary is known and ordered by a merciful Providence. Their emancipation will sooner result from the mild and melting influences of Christianity than from the storm and tempest of fiery controversy. This influence, though slow, is sure. The doctrines and miracles of our Saviour have required nearly two thousand years to convert but a small portion of the human race, and even among Christian nations what gross errors still exist! While we see the course of the final abolition of human slavery is still onward, and give it the aid of our prayers, let us leave the progress as well as the results in the hands of Him who, chooses to work by slow influences, and with whom a thousand years are but as a single day. Although the abolitionist must know this, must know that he has neither the right not the power of operating, except by moral means; that to benefit the slave he must not excite angry feelings in the master; that, although he may not approve the mode by which Providence accomplishes its purpose, the results will be the same; and that the reason he gives for interference in matters he has no concern with, holds good for every kind of interference with our neighbor—still, I fear he will persevere in his evil course. . . . Is it not strange that the descendants of those Pilgrim Fathers who crossed the Atlantic to preserve their own freedom have always proved the most intolerant of the spiritual liberty of others?"    Lee says that chattel slaves were "immeasurably better off" being owned by white Europeans than living freely in Africa.  He knew slavery was violent and morally reprehensible, but thought the institution did more harm to the white owners who reaped huge profits than the black slaves who lost literally everything when taken by slavers.  In the meantime, Lee owns, buys and sells slaves while leaving it "our Savior" to emancipate them in a thousand years or whenever he gets around to it.  Based on his own words, in my view, Lee believed slavery was God's will and that no one should try and interfere with it.

I did not find these, but they come from the same place. An old timer passed away and his family donated these to the local museum. The museum didn't really want them, but they wanted to be kind and accepted them. The director of the museum called me and asked if I wanted them. I did, but not for free, I offered a donation to the museum and took home a 5 Gal bucket of links, a little over 1/2 of a 2 Gal painters bucket of spent .50 cal projectiles and about a dozen shells. That oldtimer must of found a good honey hole or pickings were better back in the day. That is a a few weeks of searching now.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about this.  Since you appear to be a new member; I would recommend to 'bump' your post occasionally.  Your post can easily get 'buried' with other threads. just login to your original post and reply with anything. Most posters just type the word, 'bump'.  i would maybe bump your post in three months.  Then after that maybe every 6 months or so.  I really hope you get lucky and someone will find it and see your post.  You never know.  If I found it, I would gladly turn it over. Best of luck.  Cheers!

Thank you. It came with his son in law's 1950's navy uniform, who was plank holder of a cruiser (included the plank section) certificates, yearbook as well as some of his service photo's. It wasn't a yard sale price however I tried to pay a fair price especially with the intact MARKS TF album.

Look at you, SonofNamVet! I have a collecting “rule”: if you have one of something it is a curiosity, while two of something is a coincidence. But, if you have three of something, intentionally or not, you’ve started a collection. I think we can safely say you’ve started a collection … and then some!
