@jumpship and @mvmhm, thank you for the additional documents. I found the draft record, but the departure from France and his headstone application is MUCH appreciated! The cemetery he's buried in is not fully photographed, so he does not show up on Find a Grave (a shame!). I will be in contact with the cemetery to see if someone can fulfill this photo and grave information. I use Find a Grave often to cross reference info about someone whose uniform I own. Its especially helpful when their headstone states their service branch and rank, as it helps eliminate possible matches. -

I agree not enough of our history is taught in schools. We can all agree that all wars are terrible. But let's all keep the politics out of these threads. Thank you. -

Thanks as always Matt and I tend to agree that its just so different that there won't be a concrete answer as to why. All that said, hopefully it sparks some conversations and from what I understand, just having a real one is quite rare. Best to you as always. Scott -

What do you mean "Are They Real" - Yes they are real medals but specifically they all appear to be reproductions made for the collector market since the late 1940's. The 1919 Haiti appears to be made by NS Meyer Co. in the 1930's and marketed to veterans who may have lost their original. Without a good shot of the Sampson it is hard to tell but I am guessing that it is a reproduction. The Wisconsin medal is probably a good medal since it is so common no one is taking the time to reproduce them. As a new collector I suggest you take the time to invest in some good reference books rather then depending on the internet. I suggest "The Call of Duty" by Strandberg and Bender and if you are being offered medals to purchase, compare the details (suspension ring, thickness, broach etc) and if it does not look like the photos in the book - Don't buy it.
