Hi robinb,   What is the date / source for that image? I've seen other images of that attachment, similarly marked "CARGO." Can't remember where. Just when your post showed up, I had been looking for an edition of "Infantry" that briefly discussed early packboard cargo attachment development. I've read it a number of times, but now it seems to have vanished from Internet Archive. (Vexing.)   This is from TM 11-242,  RADIO SET  SCR - 300 - A,  February 1945:                            "... there are several specialized types of carrying attachment available for use with the packboard in addition to the regular cargo attachments."

GOSH! STOP! Ok now, I'm leaving, you guys are only here to waist time and create arguments that don't go anywhere! STOP! I'M FREAKING SERIOUS. I'm leaving! First it was Discord, then YouTube, now here. What's wrong with this generation?!  If you're "trying to help", that's NO WAY to do so!!! Why not encurage??? Because you're (all you guys) internet users with 4 hours of screen time and no one to help you. Just think, like ACTUALLY THINK... Why are you trying to discurage someone younger than you? "And if you aren't", why help when you can't be nice about it?? See y'all I'm done :)

Thank you so much! Now I understand. So these smaller Captain bars are probably newer than the uniform itself, I guess? Now I only have to find out what branch Major Kelley was assigned to..

Here is a yard sale find, came with a gentleman's knife collection that i purchased. He had no history on it but I think it could be dated by the primer on shell casing. Casing is approximate 1.5" length and .5 mm width. The primer is crimped in. Any help is appreciated

Yes, the trefoil knot on the sleeve. Three braids means major, and the branch insignia should be where the captain bars are.   Rank insignia were worn on the shoulder knots before WW1, but since the dress uniforms were revamped in 1938 the knots have been "plain."
