Yeager dropped out of high school junior year to enlist in the Indiana National Guard. He also wrote that he had a small stint in the Tennessee National Guard. He self reported by that by the end of his National Guard service his rank was 1st sergeant. Attached below is his National Guard discharge and Army enlistment AGO certificate shows his US Army enlistment occurring on April 23rd, 1907. He discharged out of Company B, 1st Regiment Indiana National Guard.

As I mentioned in the first post Yeager was born in Indiana. His father Alvin Rosencrans Yeager was carpenter and his mother Elise Drake Yeager was a housewife. He had one younger sister named Hazel. Attached below is a picture of Yeager as a child in the Victorian era.

"First Shot" is currently held at the US Army's West Point Museum. Unfortunately, the gallery it is exhibited in is currently closed to the public due to ongoing facility's repair. Perhaps, in another year or so the building's repairs will be complete.   Best,   V/r Lance

I picked up a pair of Universal Military Training patches this weekend because at $2 they were cheap.  That said, I never saw one with the UMT letters on it before.  Added to the collection!   -SKi

While researching Andrews’ loss on October 20, 1944, I discovered that his final mission was part of a much larger and more costly engagement than I initially realized.   The 367th Fighter Group was tasked with attacking railroad bridges in the Düren area when it encountered heavy Luftwaffe opposition. Records indicate that the 394th Squadron was attacked by approximately 16 Fw 190s, while the 392nd Squadron, Andrews’ unit, was reportedly attacked by approximately 25 Fw 190s.   The formation was broken apart during the engagement. Squadron leader Lt. Malone was shot down and captured. Lt. Mathisen was also shot down and captured. Deputy Group Commander Lt. Col. Morris Crossen was killed in action. Lt. Andrews was lost during the battle.   One document in the archive reports that Andrews engaged enemy fighters during the action and destroyed multiple aircraft before being shot down himself. Additional German records appear to indicate that the aircraft was brought down during fighter action rather than by anti-aircraft fire.
