if its sharpie acetone will remove it. I know there are pens sold that people touch up aluminum receivers and scope bodies etc The bayonet would have been parkerized originally. -

Last week I picked up this Imperial M5 bayonet. A few days ago when I was showing it to a friend they pointed out the looks to be touched up with a sharpie or something. I took different photos with the flash, without the flash, by natural sunlight to try to capture the touch up markings, zoom in on the photos to see the markings. Also if members can offer suggestions on if I should try to remove the sharpie touch ups or leave it. -

Private First Class Robert John Joseph Foley, of Norristown Pennsylvania, who served in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, C Company. Robert was fatally wounded on August 29, 1968 in the Gia Dinh province of South Vietnam. He was 19 years old. A recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals, Private First Class Foley is honored on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC on Panel 46W, Line 58. Robert lies in rest at Mt Hope Cemetery.in Mattapan Massachusetts. DUI on th eberet looks to be the 12th Inf Regt and may have served with them under the 199 LIB. -

I am unable to give a point by point assessment, I do NOT get a good impression from this one. The leather chin strap in the liner does not look like originals I have seen. Further, the application of the insignia on the cloth helmet cover looks sloppy and not what I would expect to see on a genuine military used piece of gear. -

It could be a very early numbered style, but I couldn't say for sure. There may be other collectors who have posted low numbered DFCs here in the medals section of the forum.
