It has indeed been sewn into place on the edges, I would imagine to be a cushion from whatever seat, but my guess is as good as any.

I dont understand why there is all the quibbling over the mittens? As I wrote in my first paragraph. Green mitten inserts for the black gloves. The inserts for the Black Leather Gloves are Green wool finger mittens. I did not write Green mittens with the trigger finger for the extreme cold weather mitten gloves. Those were never Black. In my 18 year Army National Guard career, I too know the difference. I was an Infantry Staff Sergeant Squad leader. 11B30. I know the difference. Its got to be in my wording Green mitten inserts.. Perhaps I should have written green wool gloves..? I thought Black Gloves makes it obvious Im not referring to the trigger finger mittens? I just call knitted gloves mittens.... Theres my error. Glove inserts.. Yes thats the ticket.. 26 years removed, my nomenclature vocabulary is rusted. Leather gloves I call gloves. Thank you.

If you provide the serial number on the Gerber, it can be dated as to the year it was made.  They both look to be in very nice condition.  Nice acquisitions.

That makes them glove inserts, not mitten inserts. There's a big and obvious difference between the two. I used olive green wool glove inserts and the trigger finger mitten wool inserts over a 21-year Army career. I can assure you there's a difference.

I also like the pace count beads... Quite the luxury. I used a piece of paracord and put a knot in it every km. I have to dig out whats left of my old LBE, but as I remember, I solved the loose buckle latch on the suspenders problem by removing the buckles and replacing them with Paracord.

This is crazy. I live in california. Eugene was my grandma's brother on my dad's side. I just had a daughter that has the middle name Gene because my grandma always said I reminded her of him. Small world.. I am interested in the chain of custody on this medal. Any information would be pretty cool.
