I think the Germans lined their fuel tanks with leather to keep them from exploding when shot. I don’t think that must have worked out very well. -

A good friend who flew with this group and was a cartoonist and painted many war time patches for the airmen drew this cartoon caracature of himself with one of his jacket patches. The cartoon drawing really resembles him but of course in a cartoonish way. He told me they got leather from the fuel tanks of wrecked Luftwaffe aircraft in North Africa. Just thought I would post this for you all to see. -
