Thank you very much for the information, this has been very helpful. Cleaning the backside of the button has taken longer than expected but I believe your initial assessment on the markings was correct.        After further cleaning, more of the backmark was exposed and appears to read "SCOVILLS & Co / EXTR?" Images of the backmark after further cleaning are below.

Perhaps it is not “CRAVEN’, but “CIAVEN” or something else.

I am a little late to the party, but according to SECNAV 15, 790, Decorations, Medals and Ribbons of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard, 1953, Bayfield was awarded the China Service Medal specifically for service during two periods:    Jul. 27, 1947–Mar. 2, 1948   Nov. 29, 1948–Mar. 30, 1949   SECNAV 15, 790 is difficult to decipher because, as you noted, the rolls for each ship contain reference to both the Occupation Service Medal and the China Service Medal with time periods often overlapping.

. And Talking of Jeeps,   another local friend has acquired another Barn-Find Jeep a Willys MB model, original paintwork and remains of markings in place, someone had painted parts of the chassis and springs with a blue household paint which can be removed fairly easily.      Norman D. . Longest Yarn Knitted Jeep Work,   we fitted the front bumper knitted cover today and stood the grille in place to see the overall appearance,   still much to be done yet, front and rear wheel arches, springs, axles, wheels and seats, it is probably not going to be a completed project by the time of opening, early April, but shown as a work in progress      Norman D. If I recall his stories correctly, Dad was stationed at Schofield Barracks for a short time in 1942. He was aboard the first army troopship to reach Hawaii after the Pearl Harbor attack. While he was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands for about a year, I believe he was stationed elsewhere most of the time. I know he was on the Big Island for a while. I wish like heck I had recorded some of his stories.  mikie

. Local Jeep Grille Find.   a local friend bought a rusty Jeep Grille a few years ago at a flea market.   Using it today to trace around to cut a board backing for the wooden display Jeep we are building for the Longest Yarn display I noticed that the Jeep it came from had been taken apart and sprayed navy grey many years ago possibly even wartime.  Evidence of the grey could be seen in the rear of the grille bars and to either side near the lights cutouts not just blasted over on the outside surfaces, O.d green was still to be seen beneath the grey paint          Norman D.
