I can’t figure it out either. But it doesn’t have a locking ring so I think it’s definitely pre-Civil War. Maybe Revolution - War of 1812 period? I’m no expert, but the shape of the slot is important here. mikie -

Can someone please help with identifying this M1 helmet camo? I dont think it's woodland camo but I may be wrong. I got it with a lot I bought of some vietnam era items. I did notice there is writing on the front but all I could make out was the bottom line: USMC. -
