. Hi Doc, Maybe he was an early volunteer into the newly formed paratroops and wanted his wings to indicate that he was there from the beginning, not a later conscript. Sadly no longer there to question about his wings . . . . . . . . . regards lewis. -

It could be a low order HE round but most likely an M60 WP which don't fragment the body like a high explosive round. The central burster just need to break it open and let the phosphorus out. I have similar M15 grenade bodies and an M57 81mm WP mortar that are split open like that. Nice piece. -

The wings appear to be made from AAF wings with the parachute from regular jump wings added -

. Hi Doc bond, Great photo, The style of the wings doesn't surprise me, here's my pillow case / sham from Fort Benning in 1941. I believe the first wings were copies of the straight wing airforce style but these weren't considered elite enough for a new style fighting unit and the curved wings were introduced to make the newly formed Paratroops stand out from any standard Airforce units. regards lewis -

I found this magazine while cleaning out my long ignored bookcase yesterday. I did not know why I had saved and displayed this particular April, 1893 Harpers Weekly. I could not remember who this admiral was. So I opened it up to look inside. Now I remember! In it is the first American publication of the Sherlock Holmes story “The Adventure of the Gloria Scott”!!!! Holmes and Watson are my absolute favorite literary characters. So there you go, a bit of slightly obscure military history and a big bit of Holmes history , all in one! Anyone else have any cool two-fers to share? mikie -
