No problems Kathy! I am not familiar with the post of groups for estimates of value so I don’t want to give you bad advice. Assessing value for groupings is always a slippery slope. Some folks separate groups in order to try to maximize their profit. Other times I see groupings sell for more than the items would have individually, it all depends upon what items are in the group. Again, as a historian first I always hope items and the history that is associated with them stay together. It seems based on what you have said you might be leaning towards selling to the right person who is intent on preserving your  grandfathers history as opposed to making as much cash possible? I think your cup for instance might do better as a part of the group than if you sold it individually, but the wing might be slightly more difficult to sell in the group than it would to a specific wing collector if you know what I mean. I still say plan to list it as a group and include as much history as you can on your grandfather.

Ok. At least it came from the family.  Not a collector put together to enhance value.    But it would appear the vet did add-in items that date well after his service.

Thanks for your response.  I think it is going to be a tough one.   I will be selling it in the near future as we have to downsize and there is no one to pass it down to and I don't want someone to get it to just melt it down.  I would have posted as a group but I thought the rules said to not post as a group. I also have a lot of photographs that he took when part of the Photographic Corps in WWI but didn't want to ask too many questions at once.   I am new here.

After replying, I saw that you are asking the same question on other items in your grandfathers collection. You would probably be better off asking members for their estimate on the entire group. I am sure I would share the sentiment of others to say I hope these items would stay together.

      Yes NASA began in 1958

I wouldn't think you would have to take it down, but it is going to be hard to evaluate. There are not a lot of comps out there and as you say, not the typical military stuff you might find here. There is a definite connection though as your Grandfather is named with his rank and it appears to have been a military endorsed event.  It is a neat piece and I would say collectible to those into early Air Corps stuff. I have seen similar items from the 20’s and 30’s named to Marines, mainly shooting awards, etc. One popular and respectable online site (though known for the high prices) had a couple of silver goblets named to a Marine from the 30’s priced at around $600 each a while back if I recall correctly. I doubt they flew off the shelf. Are you planning to sell it, or getting an estimate for insurance purposes? Either way good luck. It seems like you know and appreciate your grandfathers history.

I got this from his son.  I know he was in a flying club after the war and I saw the plaqes he recieved from NASA.  I questioned the CG crests.  The best answer I have is the CG served under the Navy in WW2

You have to be connected to the internet and use your browser.  This is because everything is stored in a database on a server.  Thus, you can log in from anywhere to include a mobile phone browser and work on your collection.   I do have plans to build out an excel export function in case someone wants to leave the platform and take their data with them.

Your proper storage, monitoring and extensive knowledge of your subject certainly reduces the "YIKES!" factor. Thanks for the most unusual post. **US Army 1st Radiological Safety Support Unit Japanese-made lighter is from my collection.

This isn't what you asked, but I hope it's helpful. I've sold a lot of vintage items and later realized I under priced some. Don't fall into the trap of looking backwards, it will just bring you down. You decided to sell them for a reason and settled on a price at the time of sale based on the facts at hand. You succeeded in selling them. Enjoy your success and sometimes be happy for making someone else's day. We've all been on both sides of that sale & it all evens out in the end. Best wishes to you & happy collecting!
