I’m moving my collection into a new bigger room and I want to put my headgear on a shelf. The problem is I can’t find a shelf big enough. I was hoping to display them by making my own display using styrofoam heads and a wood base -

Hello! This is my first post. I am a collector of radioactive antiques! I mostly collect non-military items, but there are a few military items I chase after! This is a 1940s/1950s Navy Radium Rope. It was used for marking cargo, outlining landing craft, and used as guidelines for the movement of personnel. Each unit unwinds 5 feet long. Each segment of rope contained 30uCi of Ra226 (or 1.11MBq of activity.) 30uCi is pretty hot! The average wristwatch or clock painted with radium is only around 0.1-1uCi. This is one of those military items that were all supposed to be disposed of after the war, so it's pretty crazy being able to find one intact. I purchased it off a uranium glass collector who found it in a thrift shop. Sadly, the rubber has degraded pretty badly and it is now a dark black colour. No glow is observable on a long exposure photo nor under UV. Still just as radioactive as the day it was made, though! I have gone over the rope multiple times and have not found any radium contamination. -

Amazing, that would be the jewel in any WWII G.I collection. I came across that same LIFE magazine which brought me here.
