I recently purchased the War Diary of the 151st Field Artillery, 42nd 'Rainbow' Division, for the period September 4th 1917 to May 10th 1919, commanded by Colonel, later Major General, George Emerson Leach. 1876-1955. The book had the following inscription by Colonel Leach 'To William Kempton Jr so you will know about the war your distinguished Dad was in' and signed 'George E Leach, Colonel, 151st FA' Research has revealed the father of William Edward Kempton Junior, 1924-2014, was Corporal William Ellis Kempton, 1897-1961,146467, Headquarters Company, 151st Field Artillery. William sailed for France from Hoboken, New Jersey, aboard the USS President Lincoln on October 18th 1917 as a Private. He returned to the States as a Corporal in the Headquarters Company, 151st Field Artillery, aboard the USS Huntington from Brest, France, on April 17th 1919, arriving in Brooklyn, New York, on April 26th 1919. The return manifest is marked 'To Camp Merritt'. Williams person to be informed in case of emergency was Robert H Kempton, Father, of Morgan, Minnesota. See attached for the inscription by Colonel Leach. The 151st Field Artillery War Diary can be viewed online at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89066171570&seq=1 -
