Your CBI guy was in an Aviation Engineer Bn, which would account for the engineer brass.

I’ve had one for a while and recently picked up the other two. Slight variations in the three.  All have the same casting number.  However, the font is different and one has the ordnance bomb. Any info about authenticity and production timeline would be greatly appreciated.   Jay

Those are very minor issues - the type that often existed when these were issued. You could use a dry soft toothbrush very lightly on the steel bits but frankly, with 50 years of collecting and archival training, you are best to just leave it alone. in 99% of cases attempts to hide or 'fix' normal wear, age, stains, and use wind up turning into the dreaded "I-see-you-tried-to-repair-it" look.  Most collectors/historians etc. would rather see an issue normal for its age than a blatantly modern intrusion left by an amateurs recent fix-it attempt.

Yes the blueing is in great shape for a used G46-8 Western. Most of the large Western's were private purchase knives made by the G.I.'s before leaving Stateside.  Do you know if your Grandfather was on the West Coast before shipping out?

Very cool dvs, did you happen to see the one on eBay right now? Another JCRC! Very cool to see. Any records or anyone track the the different styles of engravings done? Thoughts on when and where they were done for the Vets? Cause some I've seen similar "font" if you will and others not. 👍

A fair price for such an uncommon wing!  A nice addition to someone’s collection. Congratulations to the winner.    Chris

Just dug out my old shirts.  Turns out, my perma press shirt (center) is the most faded.  Wore it from 1979 to 1982 in numerous field exercises, where it was subjected to rain, sun and numerous washings.  The field laundries we used on month-long 2 AD FTX's probably had the harshest effect on the material.  I never wore the OG 107 in the field, as it would look terrible after wearing it for a week or so straight. The MSC collar branch insignia I wore (OG 107 shirt on left) has the obsolete late 1960's "colored" MS letters in the circle.    Went to all black soon after (my BN Cmdr pointed it out once, but didn't seem to have a problem with it. ). As an insignia collector even way back then, I liked wearing it.  The BDU I have still has good color.  The black  on this one didn't yet fade to purple.

That's from an 'incident' in 1979 when the RANGER sliced through a Liberian tanker in the Straits of Malacca.  They returned to Subic for temporary repairs prior to making for the naval shipyard at Yokosuka to be drydocked.   04/04/79: The USS Ranger (CV-61) sustains substantial damage in a collision with the Liberian tanker Fortune near the eastern approaches to the Strait of Malacca. There are no injuries and the Ranger heads toward Subic Bay while the tanker, holed in the port side from the main deck to the waterline, is towed to Singapore. On 20 April the Ranger voyages to Yokosuka, Japan, after completing interim repairs to her bow.   -->>  The USS Ranger's Sticky Collision
