USS Stark FFG-31 Master at Arms badge #2.    The Stark was an Oliver Hazard Perry class Fast Frigate commissioned in 1982.   On 18 May 1987 the Stark was attacked and hit by two Exocet missiles fired from an Iraqi aircraft in the Persian Gulf. The attack, and lack of shipboard defensive systems response is still clouded in mystery to this day.    37 Crewmen died.    USS Stark survived the attack and was eventually decommissioned in 1999. She was scrapped in 2005/6. Her stern plate is on display at the USS Stark memorial at Mayport Naval Station.    Very happy and honored to have this badge.

One of the labels is missing on your container. That is an SRU-15/P Sleeping Bag - Container, Parachute Bailout that contains an MC-1 sleeping bag. They were used in various survival kits by both the Air Force and Army. Your container was used by the Air Force based on the label with the Air Force TO number. The MC-1 sleeping bag was packed is several different manners and is a reversable down filled sleeping bag that is green on one side and white on the other. There was no zipper, just a drawstring at the open end. The sleeping bag has a 1958 drawing number, and the container has a 1959 drawing number. I have not seen any containers like yours that were made after the Mid 1960's, but they remained in service until 1990's when they were replaced by another vacuum-packed sleeping bag.   Inside the container, the sleeping bag was packed in a vinyl bag, vacuum sealed then compressed into the fiberglass container. The center closing bolt was then poked through all the layers of the sleeping bag that happened to fall between the top and bottom of the container. That is why when you see the sleeping bags open, there are numerous holes in them.

The insignia is for the staff college, so not a unit guidon per se, but for the school. Very nice souvenir nonetheless and some great history contained on it. Also of interest is the eagle on the insignia, with the vertical star pattern it is a pre 1991 version as Saddam ordered the national eagle changed after the 91 gulf war, they went to a horizontal version for the stars.      Scott
