This RPPC came from the diary of my great grandfather, Claude Millard Mullwee. Although he never wrote down any details on this specific photograph, his diary and John A. Cutchins’ history of the division provide some insight into the losses he saw. Claude served in Company K of the 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division and fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. A total of 20 men in Co. K lost their lives during the war, 12 of whom were KIA, 5 due to wounds, and 3 of other causes. 2 of the men, Privates James Parisi and Walter Tenas Wissink, lost their lives after the war had concluded. It’s difficult to say how my great grandfather felt about these deaths. By taking the time to write his experience, however, he provided insight into the fates of 5 of the soldiers. On October 10, 1918, early into his combat experience, he was put on a burying detail, where he “helped burry thirteen americans and thre Germans We buried seven americans in one shell hole.” A few days later, on the 12th, Co. K was moved to the front lines, holding their position for three days “and becaue shell fire our casaultie we large” One of these casualties was Private Henry Otto Warmbier. “There wasn’t very much happen on the 14 but a few men killed and wounded,” possibly including Private Dudley Robinett Cason. The next day, Claude wrote that “We were met by the heaviest machine gun fire I ever experienced. We had a large number of casualty,” including Privates William Henry Bauer and Robert Lawrence “Doc” Jenkins. At 7:00 AM, October 24, they came under the heaviest barrage he ever experienced. “There was one man killed and another wounded by my side.” My great grandfather was with Private Michael Walsh in the final moments of his life.
