My gut tells me it's fake, and I doubt it's a prototype. If I was really trying to sell a product to the military, I would think my product would be a top-notch device to draw attention and sell it. -

I have two Knife Crafters WW2 Knives. I am wondering about something on the Sheath. There is a tab on the end with a hole in it. What was that for? did it attach to a button on the pant leg ? Or was it used to tie a Lace around the leg like a holster ? -

They aren’t common, nor particularly rare. Every qualified man had one. I suppose many were thrown away over time. They are fascinating artifacts unique to the submarine force. -

I think the pin holes in your canteen are from corrosion or from minor imperfections in the aluminum stock used. Someone may have put something acidic in the canteen like lemonade at some point. I have attached a canteen from my collection that shows what happens when corrosion gets out of control. As for the "7". Aluminum Company of America "ACA" seems to havedate coded their canteens in 1918 from April ( 4 ) to November ( 11 ). Some ACA canteens also have a small star. This is from observations of original canteens and does not appear in an correspondence between ACA and the government that I could find at the National Archives. The instructions to all canteen manufactures in mid December 1917 only asked for the maker and the year to be stamped into canteen bodies.
