I've noticed some early 1917 style US Army buttons, probably the first made, have a faint, maybe concave border instead of the rised ones that would be common later. Here are a few pics. -

I think the US Army buttons that are deeply embossed are generally post WW2 and the ones with steel backs are almost always mid-WW2, I found two deeply embossed army buttons with steel backs. One Waterbury, one Superior Quality. -
